Courage for the Called: Leading with God's Presence
Sermon Summary
In this powerful sermon on Joshua 1, Dr. George Murray reflects on the leadership transition from Moses to Joshua—and draws a parallel to modern church transitions. Though Moses and Joshua were very different, they shared the one thing that mattered most: the presence of God. The same truth applies today—whether it’s Pastor George Crow or Pastor Josh Desch, the same God leads His people. Transitions may bring fear, but God’s promise remains: “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you.” God does not leave. He equips, strengthens, and goes with those He calls.
Sermon Notes
🔑 Main Passage
Joshua 1:1–9
“As I was with Moses, so I will be with you.”
🔍 Big Idea:
What Moses and Joshua had in common—and what every God-called leader shares—is not ability or legacy, but the abiding presence of the Lord.
🧭 Key Truths:
1. Leadership Transitions Are Daunting
Joshua followed Moses—the greatest prophet in Israel’s history.
Moses was humanly irreplaceable, but divinely succeeded.
“Moses, My servant, is dead…Now therefore arise…” (Joshua 1:2)
2. God’s Call Often Comes With Fear
Joshua was told four times: “Be strong and of good courage.”
Leaders feel the weight of what they’re stepping into.
God addresses Joshua’s fear directly: “Do not be afraid.”
3. God’s Presence Is the One Constant
“As I was with Moses, so I will be with you.” (v.5)
Not similarity in personality or gifting—presence is the essential.
God doesn’t retire, resign, or retreat.
4. God’s Word & Prayer Sustain the Leader
Joshua was told to meditate on the Word “day and night.”
Pastors must be anchored in the Word and prayer to lead well.
The leader must grip the Word with one hand, and heaven with the other.
5. The People Need the Same Reminder
Joshua reminded the people: “The Lord your God is with you.”
The congregation affirmed their support:
“Only the Lord your God be with you...be strong and of good courage.”
🧠 Reflection Questions
What are you afraid of stepping into?
Are you trusting God’s presence more than your performance?
What leadership role (formal or informal) has God placed in your hands?
How are you feeding your soul with the Word and depending on Him in prayer?
📣 Closing Charge to Leaders & Congregation
Leaders: Be strong and of good courage.
Congregation: Support your leaders by reminding them: The Lord YOUR God is with you.
